Do I need insurance if I am only transiting through Georgia?+
Yes, it is mandatory. Even if you are crossing Georgia purely for transit purposes (for a few hours or days), third-party liability insurance is required by law for all foreign-registered vehicles. The minimum available coverage period is 15 days.
How do I choose the correct vehicle category?+
Select the category indicated in your vehicle registration certificate (V5C / title): Passenger Car (M1): Standard cars designed for passengers (up to 8+1 seats); Motorcycle (L): Motorcycles and scooters with engine displacement over 50 cc; Bus / Minibus (M2, M3): Passenger vans, minibuses, and coaches; Truck (N1, N2, N3): Cargo transport categorized by gross weight; Trailer (O): Light or heavy trailers (must be insured separately).
What validity options are available for the policy?+
You can purchase coverage based on the length of your stay: 15 days, 30 days, 90 days, or 1 year (365 days). If your trip extends beyond the initial period, you can easily renew the policy online at any time.
What does this compulsory vehicle insurance cover?+
This is a Mandatory Third-Party Liability (MTPL) insurance policy. It covers damage caused to third parties in an accident where you are at fault: Bodily injury, medical treatment, or wrongful death of third parties; Property damage to third-party vehicles or roadside infrastructure. Please note: This is not comprehensive/CASCO insurance and does not cover damage sustained by your own vehicle.
What is the fine for driving an uninsured foreign vehicle in Georgia?+
Operating or entering Georgia with an uninsured foreign-registered vehicle is subject to administrative fines: 100 GEL for passenger cars and motorcycles; 200 GEL for trucks and buses. Paying the fine does not grant an exemption—you must still obtain a valid policy immediately.
Does an International Green Card cover driving in Georgia?+
No. Georgia is not a member of the International Green Card system. International Green Cards issued in Europe or other countries are not recognized here, meaning you must buy a dedicated Georgian mandatory third-party liability policy.
Do I need to print out the insurance policy?+
No, printing is not required. Once issued, your digital policy is delivered via email and SMS. Keeping the PDF on your smartphone is fully recognized and accepted by border control and the patrol police.
Where and how is the insurance policy verified?+
Insurance status is verified at border inspection checkpoints upon arrival and by patrol police throughout Georgia. The policy is instantly registered in the unified state electronic database, allowing officers to check vehicle coverage electronically by license plate number.
